:: on why i'm not blogging (at least for now) ::

i blogged here regularly for almost six straight years - sometimes daily, sometimes less than that, but i was here often and happily.

and then this summer i just stopped writing.

for better or for worse i came to see that blogging was taking away from my ability - and my need - to communicate directly with the people in my life. i would put everything all on the line here on the blog and then sort of blindly hope that the people who i needed to know those things would read them, understand what they meant for me and for them, and respond in some appreciable and appropriate way.

and it does work that way sometimes. sometimes i write here about the things i find it really hard to say in real life, and then the right people read those things and eventually sort of find a quiet moment to tell me everything is okay or what i am feeling is normal or that they are feeling it, too.

mostly, though, it was other people - not the ones i was trying to kind of telepathically communicate with - who would pull me aside (literally or over email or whatever) and say that what i'd written had touched them and they found me brave and whatnot.

it will be those people who will bring me back to blogging if and when i return. it's those people who make me feel like blogging brings me closer to having some kind of meaning or purpose in my life. for whatever reason i'm blessed with a certain vulnerability and willingness to share that vulnerability, and i do feel like that vulnerability is the key to how i connect with and can help better the lives of other people.

but i've come to think that even though blogging honestly the way i do looks like bravery to a lot of people, for me it became a way of making myself less vulnerable and therefore less  brave. it makes me - has made me - less capable of being vulnerable with real people in face-to-face communication. i feel that is robbing me of something i need and that the people i love need from me.

blogging can't be my own means of communicating with the people in my day-to-day life. it can't be a surrogate for talking about what's happening in my life, how i'm feeling about it, etc., because it's too one-directional. i need to rekindle my ability to participate in bi-directional communication.

so i'm taking some time off. i'm not sure how or when i'll be back, but i do feel like i will want to eventually. i feel like i'll want to keep on making those crucial, vulnerable, brave connections with people i don't know. like i'll want to continue encouraging people to get the yucky stuff OUT into the world instead of inside their heads, and encouraging that by doing it. but i can't keep doing it at the expense of being able to get the yucky stuff OUT into my own daily world, if that makes any sense.

i've missed blogging the last few months, but i've also surprisingly not missed it. i haven't felt compelled to do it the way i used to.

am i communicating better in my life? maybe yes, maybe no. but at least i feel like i'm not doing the kind of indirect, smoke-and-mirrors faux-communicating i was doing before, writing all kinds of things and just hoping they'd magically get to their right recipients. so at least there's that.

see ya when i see ya.

(and if you want to keep up with my non-personal-business-y stuff, there's always the shop blog and my up up creative facebook page).

:: guest post time ::

i realize there are people who don't really want to hear other people lament about things they brought on themselves. i might even be one of those people.

but when people are introspective and reflective, even if what they're introspective and reflective about is a situation they brought on themselves, even asked for, i'm willing to listen.

if you'd like to listen, i wrote a guest post for the heartmade blog about this whole experiment thing. i've got a few more guest posts and interviews coming in the next few weeks, too, which i'll apprise you of as they come.

'kay? 'kay.

(p.s. the post on heartmade is a pretty good one, i think, and worth the read, i think.)

:: administrative notes ::

i forgot to tell you: my new shop comes with its own new blog, so i've decided to try splitting things up a bit more than i do now. stuff about me me me and my life and what i think and feel about being a business owner will go here. stuff about new products, items, etc. will go there.

i've added a little link-list to the left sidebar of thishereblog so you can see what's new over at thatthereblog.

:: the blogger's dilemma ::

i've been putting off my first post of 2011 because i wanted it to be thoughtful. but come on now. it's the eighth. so instead of thoughtful i thought i'd give you a quick, thoughtless hello so we can move on already.

'ello. hope you're well. i've missed you.

:: Just Five ::

[ because there haven't been nearly enough pictures of the girl on this blog, some gratuitous baby shots - five of them to be sort of relevant to this post. ]
so, friends, i have a weird question. if you could take this blog and condense it into five categories -- just five, mind you -- what five categories would you choose? they don't have to be existing categories, just five words or phrases that would nicely divide up my content to make it more easily searchable.

also, if you could ADD a category that you don't currently see -- in other words if you could convince me to add something of interest to this here blog -- what would that category be?

:: oh yeah! ::

how could i have forgotten to tell you? how!? my new column on scoutie girl debuted last thursday, and today featured the second installment. pop on over and read them - you'll find me writing (each thursday morning) in a slightly less personal voice, but i think you'll see it's still the same old me you've grown to love.

ahem.

:: trying something new ::

years ago, i switched from blogger to wordpress because i wanted to be able to reply to comments via email. then i switched to wordpress.org because i wanted CONTROL, baby. and then my entire blog disappeared and i fled to blogger once more. but here we are four years after i started that first blogger blog and i still can't reply to comments via email.

lame.

so i just installed a new comment system (it will only work on new posts otherwise all of my old comments will be obliterated, which ain't cool). leave me a comment so i can test it.

THANKS!

:: what? i have a blog? ::

[ photo : "raspberry hill" by ara133photography on etsy ]

my unintentional "holy crap my life is hectic... what? i have a blog?" blog break has me thinking a bit about this here blog and what it's doing here and what i want it to be doing. and so now i just want to ask you:

what do you like about this little space? what brings you back for more?

because me? i kind of see it as serving a few functions:

(1) it helps me stay sane and "normal"
(2) it has provided opportunities for me to connect with people in this new solitary life i'm living (staying home with the kids, working for myself, long hours at the computer and the paper cutter...)
(3) it allows me to explore what it means to run an indie business
(4) it lets me try things out on you - to gauge your interest in new designs and projects and ideas
(5) it helps me document my life as it speeds right on by me...

but i'd also sort of like to see it do some other things, like:
(1) help promote other people who are out there busting their asses like i am, trying to be seen and heard and appreciated
(2) collect inspiration
(3) foster dialogue more

does that seem like insanity? is it too much? would it annoy you if i started having weekly features or columns to help keep myself (and my blog? perhaps...) a little bit more organized?

:: must-see print design blog? this little old blog? well shucks! ::

finding out today that up up, the blog was included on a list of "50 must-see print design blogs" alongside amazing blogs like grain edit, i love typography, freshly blended, and print + pattern shocked, amazed, and humbled me.

and it guilted me into posting on this-here must-see print design blog. hmm. too bad it's ten o'clock already and time for me to call it quits before my head spins right round, round round.

check out the other blogs on the list in the time you would have spent reading a substantial blog post here on my blog. but be sure not to forget who sent you because i swear one of these days when i have an intern and a nanny and my shit together, i'll be back to my regularly scheduled blogging and free-stuff-giving.

:: behind the redesign, coming soon ::

thanks to a slow day in the shop yesterday, i gave myself permission to do something a little non-emergent today. it wasn't intended to be a full blog redesign, but here it is anyway. much simpler and more streamlined.

i'm planning on writing up a little post about my process with the redesign. look for it this week.

if you don't see the new look, hit refresh in your browser and it should magically appear.

:: 09/10: love and excitement and lots and lots of planning ::

i guess there's not much more to say than this: 2009 was a pretty fantastic year. my gut sort of wants to say that it was a hard year. a year of change and turmoil and anxiety and confusion. but my rational brain scans back over the year and keeps coming back to the realization that an awful lot of good came of this year:
  • a full year home in new york with lots of family around;
  • a new home that we love and that i still sometimes look around thinking, "whoa. this is ours?"
  • a healthy (if physically and mentally uncomfortable) pregnancy;
  • a sweet new baby (who is napping so so peacefully next to me in her swing as i type) and a possibly even sweeter (and now potty-trained!!) two-and-a-half-year-old who is slipping into his new position in the family with more ease than i ever even hoped;
  • an amazing year for my business (i'm going to do my 2009 books today but i'm very happy to report that my business is in the black and i've got some money to spend in 2010 to help it flourish and prosper)...
these next few weeks are going to be crazy and overwhelming and exciting. brian has one more week off from work before he goes back and leaves me all. alone. with. two. kids. and i've got some new valentines stuff to get up in the shop (the above image is not one that will be in the shop but look for other new "i love you so much" cards for 2010). but most exciting of all is the planning i get to do for 2010. the business planning.

this time last year i was just starting to narrow down my focus in the shop and i spent most of the year sort of flying by the seat of my pants. a year later i finally feel ready to sit down and set some specific long- and short-term goals and to plot out a course for my little business. just thinking about it sends little tremors of excitement through my body.

i'll do my best to share all that excitement with you this year. this past year here at the new blog has been great and i've so appreciated your readership, your friendship, and your support. i'm so pleased with the wonderful comments you've left and i hope that you'll continue to leave more in 2010.

happy new year, all.

:: read this blog ::

{this image is from pretty good.}

a blog's not a blog without images, at least in my opinion. in fact, one of my favorite new blogs is almost nothing but pictures.

you must go check out pretty good. you must. it's a photoblog with just the tiniest bit extra, and that tiny bit takes it to a whole new level. plus it's totally gorgeous.

:: blog housekeeping ::

a few blog-related items to tackle today:

(1) the new navigation. fancy, eh? just trying to clean things up, make navigating a little easier, and make things like my email info a little bit easier to find. now includes links to my flickr photostream as well as my book recommendations. you'll notice that the "i am" button doesn't link anywhere. that's because the "i am" stuff is still here on the main page and i haven't moved it yet.

(2) i'm thinking of opening up a few advertising spots on the blog. i've gone back and forth on this for YEARS and i've been torn but i finally decided that if there are people out there who want to support this blog well who am i to stop them? i'd like to support their shops and small businesses, too. seems win-win. if you are interested in ad space, please contact me via the email link at right.

(3) word.play stuff... coming tomorrow. i'll have links to the other participants from july, info about joining the flickr group and adding your photos, and most importantly, the NEXT WORD.

see you then, peeps. i'm off to have dinner with brian's family and my adorable nieces.

:: :: each penny pretty is seeking contributors :: ::

I woke up this morning and my uterus had seemingly swelled to twice its size. My abdomen is definitely looking less pudgy and more pregnant. It's insane.

(If you missed the announcement, you'll find it here.)

And even though I have thirty weeks left until the baby is due (jeez I'm only ten weeks pregnant, belly... stop growing already), I woke up determined to invite some regular contributors to join me in writing my little design blog. I'll still write my usual posts, but I'm looking for one or two contributors to write a weekly column (complete with images).

To apply for a position, please send me a proposal explaining the focus of your column. Why would it appeal to EPP readers? What kinds of ideas or products would it feature? What unique expertise or interest or approach can you bring to the topic? What can you add to EPP that I don't already do?

You can email your proposals to me by clicking here, and please include links to past writing (a blog if you've got it) and a brief bio.

:: :: more on the rally :: ::

wow. i just started reading some of the letters at postpartum progress. you really need to get over there. it'll help you know and understand me better. it will help you know and understand all moms better.

{see post below for details}

:: :: mother's day rally for moms' mental health :: ::

today, instead of writing something here on my blog, i'm writing over at a katherine's blog. please head on over to postpartum progress to read my letter (and 23 other letters) to new moms.

i'm really proud to be participating in this online rally that started at midnight last night and runs until midnight tonight. the rally features open letters to new mothers on the importance of maternal health. one letter will be published each hour on the hour.

i don't know what time mine will be, but just head over and keep checking if you must. (oh, okay, i'll post a link here to my letter when it's published...)

and to all of you, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

:: :: top five :: ::

although i am not totally surprised that i am somewhat talented at the business-end of running a new business (and could i add more qualifiers and vague adjectives in one clause please), i have to say that i am a bit surprised how consuming it can become.

in my blog reader, for example, i have at least 44 blogs i follow that i consider "work-related" blogs. i read these to stay current with trends, to see what's going on out in the wider design world, to be exposed to things i wouldn't normally find. i also read them to get business advice, creative inspiration, and a dose of reality. and sure, i read them to see if anyone is out there talking about me. i feel weird saying that but it's true. because sometimes they are. and i think that's exciting.

the trouble is, each of those 44 blogs posts daily. some post several times a day. it's too much for anyone to keep up with.

and reading them in a blog reader is like eating diet ice cream. it's cold and sweet but there's nothing wonderful or luxurious about it. you don't get the full ice cream experience.

so i'm attempting to pare it down. (did i mention i follow 40 blogs that i don't consider work-related?) i'm trying to choose just ten. ten that inspire me. ten that i enjoy reading each day. ten that i really really love.

and i'm looking for your help.

i know, i know. i have 84 blogs in my blog reader. but frankly? they don't all inspire me. and i know there are some gorgeous, thoughtful blogs out there that i'm missing. so if you don't mind, can you share your top five? or even your top two? i'm out looking but i'd love your help.

thanks. i'm looking forward to my blog cream. maybe in a cone.

:: :: oddities :: ::

i just hit publish on twenty or so of the lost-by-me-and-wordpress-and-then-found-by-my-friend-anne-and-google-reader posts from the old blog. they're mostly from around the time i sometimes inappropriately refer to as the time i went crazy or the time i had a mental breakdown. they're from last summer when i was diagnosed with postpartum depression and honestly feared i was going crazy and/or having a mental breakdown.

i wasn't doing either, of course.

anyway, i don't know when i'll get around to adding all of the lost posts but i hope to add a few here and there as time goes by and eventually i hope they will all be restored. i hope they don't show up all weird and out of order in your blog readers. if they do, well, enjoy the recap of my life. it's been a doozy so far.

:: :: so good :: ::

i went searching the wild wild web for the perfect word to describe what happened yesterday, and despite a veritable plethora of vocabulary fantasticness (prodigious? portentous? staggering? stupendous? sublime? miraculous?) i still just think the best word is good.

good good good. honest to god good. good like in the yoplait commercials where the two girls talk about good.

my friend, my good good friend, sent me my lost blog posts. everything since december 2007. she had them in her google reader. and she copied them into a word file. and she sent them to me. and i gushed on and on about how awesome she is.

because i have all that stuff from last summer back. BACK! i am slowly copying it into blogger with the original dates. it'll be awhile but it'll be up here sometime in the nearish future.

sound good?

:: :: oh dear, oh dear :: ::

where, oh where has my little blog gone? oh where, or where can it be?

i can't even begin to explain how sad i am that my blog is gone. i've been running that blog since 2006. it has documented my pregnancy, the birth of my first child, my postpartum depression, my decision to stop working on my dissertation in english, our efforts to move home to new york, my work at building a shop.

i think i still have the post data somewhere on my server, which is the partially good news. i'm just not sure it's retrievable in any reasonable way.

one of my favorite writers, maxine hong kingston, once lost an entire manuscript -- i think it was 500 pages -- in a fire; she had to sit down to entirely rewrite the manuscript from memory. i always admired that so much, and thought how hard it would be to continue on with the same story. i think i would have just started fresh with something new.

now here i am wondering how on earth i could ever possibly recreate my own past. i just couldn't. how could i recapture what i was feeling those first days after evan's birth? or during those days of anxiety when i was gripped tightly in the fists of my depression?

anyone who doesn't think a blog is an important document -- who thinks that it is just some kind of random daily rambling, which it may well be -- is so wrong. i can't believe there were moments when i considered just deleting my blog forever because not enough people were reading it. as if a blog is about its readers and not about the amazing way it frames and reframes your life every single time you post. the way it documents not just events and feelings but frames of mind, perspectives...

if you don't have a blog perhaps you will consider starting one today in honor of my gone blog. and leave me a comment with a link if you do.
